Players head to regional SA for Community Camp

PORT ADELAIDE players, coaches and support staff set off for regional South Australia this morning, as part of the annual AFL Community Camp.

Port is traveling to the Yorke Peninsula, Port Lincoln, Ceduna and Yalata over the next two days – delivering healthy lifestyle and positive decision-making messages to school children throughout the area, as well as aged care facilities and hospitals.

Power Community Ltd General Manager Ross Wait says the community camp will reach 10,000 people across the three regions, which is exciting for the club.

“It’s a great opportunity for the club to give back to the regional community,” Wait told portadelaidefc.com.au.

“We will visit schools, football clubs, hospitals, aged-care facilities, and community groups throughout the two days.”

The Power has a strong connection with these regions already, with a number of players and former players growing up or currently working in regional South Australia.

Lindsay Thomas will visit his hometown of Port Lincoln, Sam Gray will return to his childhood school Ungarra, while Cameron Hewitt will head back to Port Broughton on the Yorke Peninsula where he grew up.

St Mary MacKillop will be among the schools visited during the community camp, where eight-time premiership player Paul Northeast works as the Education Support Officer.

Wait says it is great to have those connections already, but the club is keen to have a strong impact throughout the whole region.

“As part of the camp, we will support the communities in raising vital funds for grass roots sports and promoting Auskick within the regions,” he said.

“Any participant of Auskick who chooses Port Adelaide as their club of choice will receive a Port Adelaide Auskick junior membership this season.

“It’s a great initiative from the AFL – one that benefits both the regional community and the club.”
